Don Burnham
has worked continuously in the Marine Engineering field in various positions
with steadily increasing responsibility since graduation in 1956 from the U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, (USMMA) except for a brief
period as an aerospace engineer during 1959-60.

Supervised
up to twelve (12) Port Engineers on all three U.S. coasts in the maintenance
and repair programs of up to twenty-eight (28) U.S. flag break bulk,
container, passenger/cargo and LASH vessels. Responsibilities included
estimating and budgeting, approval of all engineering and repair requisitions
and invoices, preparation of bid specifications, awarding repair bids and
settling damage claims. Left when Delta Lines ceased operations. |
Port Engineer - 1966-1983

Responsible for maintenance and repair, including drydockings, inspections for
certification and other inspections, class surveys, damage surveys, special
surveys, writing specifications, negotiating repair invoice settlement, final
invoice rewrite, cost estimating and budget preparation for various U.S. flag
steam and motor break-bulk ships, passenger/cargo steamships and barge
carrying (LASH) steamships. |

Became
familiar with ABS Rules, U.S.C.G., U.S. Customs, FCC, USDA, USPHS Regulations
and other rules and regulations pertaining to oceangoing vessels.

with claims and average adjustors preparing H&M and P&I claims for
presentation to underwriters. |

Assisted
naval architects in developing specifications and plans for major alteration
and conversion of vessels. |

Helped
attorneys prepare defenses in personal injury cases and marine casualty
litigation. Participated in trials as an expert witness. |
